• Txting Tips & Tricks
Got no credit?
If you're an O2 customer and you receive a message from a friend who is also with O2, but you have no credit to respond, instead of appearing to ignore them, you can send a "Call me" message to them for free.
To do this, type in *103* followed by the O2 mobile number of your friend and the hash key - e.g. *103*0861234567# and then press the (green) call/send key.
Meteor customers can use the Ring Me service - you simply text the number of person you want to contact to 50001 and Meteor will send them a free SMS saying "The person at ... has no credit and would like you to ring them."
Meteor's service works no matter which network your friend is with, even foreign mobiles.
Predictive Txt / Faster Txting
While Predictive Txt is designed to help you txt faster, you may find it quicker to turn off predictive texting altogether, especially if you use a lot of creative abbreviations.
On most Nokia phones, you can quickly turn off predictive text, simply by holding down on the Options/Menu button while txting, or else by tapping the # key twice in quick succession. Do the same again to set it back on.
When you don't use predictive text, certain words are really tricky on mobiles because 3 letters in a row use the same key.
Examples: night effect cab money gig feed back
For these, just use another word/spelling instead :
nite fct txi muney show fd bak
Without predictive txt, when you need to type two letters the same in a row (e.g. t in 'better'),instead of waiting for the text position to move on, type the first letter and then type in any wrong letter and delete it immediately, then type the right letter again - this saves time.
For faster texting, use your left thumb for the left column of keys (4,7) and your right thumb for the middle and right columns (2580 & 369).
Roaming tricks
If you're going to roam, you'll need to change your Irish address book entries to international +353 format. But if you're only going to send txts from abroad, not call, you can leave the mobile numbers in 08- format and they will still work correctly.
If your msg isn't delivered right away, Vodafone retries an undelivered message for upto 3 days before giving up. O2 & Meteor are more generous, retrying for up to 7 days.
You can surprise your friends returning from holiday by sending them a "Welcome home!" message while they're on the flight home. It will be delivered as soon as they switch their phone back on after reaching Ireland, and you'll be the first to say hello as they power on their phone while waiting for their baggage!

More SMS tricks...
Memory Full - If the envelope symbol on your phone is flashing, it means that you received a message that could not be stored because your Sim/phone memory was full. Delete some messages and the network will retry sending it to you later.
Status Reports - When sending a message, if you begin your text with *R* on O2 & Meteor (e.g. *R* Whazzup! ), you will receive a free detailed SMS, giving the status of the message you sent, which is much better than the Delivery Reports on some phones which just say Failed, Pending or Delivered and usually don't beep.
Status reports are a great way of trying to get hold of someone who's left their phone off - as soon as they turn on their phone you'll receive a free message saying that your message was delivered. Star R Star - it's a winner.
Beep Beep - On Nokia's, switch your Message alert tone from Special to Standard so you don't drive your friends crazy when your SMS's arrive! (Special="beep beep beep beeeeep beep beep beep beep beeep").
Long Msg - Some phones allow so-called "Long Short Messages" to be sent, upto 640 characters. These are really separate messages, and so you are still charged for every 160 characters sent. Many phones receiving this type of message don't assemble them together properly as one long message, but instead simply show the message parts separately,as e.g. "2/3" etc., so its better to just to squash what you have to say into a single message.
